Gaius Primus (20 Marpenoth 1461 DR) is a human male ranger and founding member of the Dawn Guard.
Early Life
Gaius was born as the eldest son--the first born of twins--and heir apparent of the King of Araluen. He grew up in and around the castle and was put to work helping the servants and craftsmen. "A king cannot lead those whose lives he does not understand," his father was quoted as saying.
Gaius' mother, the queen, died of consumption in 1473 DR. Her death destroyed the king, who took ill himself and died six months later.
While Gaius' father was on his death bed, a series of accidents occurred which Gaius eventually determined to be caused by his younger twin, Gaius Secondus. Unable to bring himself to fight his brother, Gaius abdicated and left Shinovar to wander Araluen. He found work in a logging village and lived there for a few years before a threatening note from his brother was pinned to his cabin door.
In 1478 DR, Gaius returned to Shinovar, finding it a ruin of its former glory, as Secondus had run it into the ground. Gaius stole into the royal bedchamber of the castle and attempted to kill Secondus in his sleep, but Secondus had learned enough spells to slip away from the attack. The two fought until Gaius killed his brother with their father's silver crown.
Gaius left Araluen aboard a ship, but was attacked by the Hellbound Rose. Gaius and a few other survivors were pressed into service on the ship as it returned to Medale. He learned the basics of sailing, though often through painful lessons. After months of service on the Rose, Gaius was able to escape from Medale, making the treacherous climb over Dragonback Ridge to Inhyrst. From Inhyrst, Gaius wandered until finding himself in Cuford and the Wastes.
In a cave in the Wastes, Gaius encountered a troll. While he was able to kill it, the troll inflicted mortal wounds upon him and Gaius lay in the cave ready to die. Luckily, a hunting party from the Nikolova Family discovered him and brought him back to Cuford for healing. After regaining his strength, he joined up with the Nikolovas and eventually became engaged to Katarina.
